Too often, people in the creative fields (designers, actors, artists, writers, teachers, coaches, etc.) go about trying to make more money by focusing on doing more of the things they know. They try to make themselves more employable by improving their skills, or by engaging in networking methods that don’t produce the kinds of results they want, or by taking on more and more gigs that don’t pay the kind of money they really need. They end up burnt out, overworked, and financially strained. Sometimes they even begin to resent the very creative endeavors that they were passionate about in the first place.

Most creatives didn’t spend years in business school, and so they simply don’t know the basic techniques that would allow them to produce the kind of income they would really like to have. They don’t know how to research and pick a target, they don’t know how to package and price, they don’t know how to create effective marketing funnels, and they usually hate doing sales. We have found that few creatives know how to have a sales conversation, and that they dramatically undersell themselves in negotiations.

At Our Core…

Being creatives, we began building our business serving other creatives. Our clientele was originally made up almost exclusively of actors, designers, filmakers, writers, photographers, and others in what people would consider creative professions. Then we began to service a large number of teachers, healers, coaches and people that also tend to be left-brain thinkers.

But in addition to these, we also have a number of clients who are not necessarily in creative professions that have come to us to learn the basics of building a business, because they skills we teach are so readily applied to any business venture, and because we help people develop business models that really work. So while most of our clients are creatives at heart, we also provide business coaching to entrepreneurs in with any skill set.

Pick a Target

We have found that one of the mistakes creatives make most often is to try to serve everyone. They are so glad to get paid for what they do that they take every gig, they book every client, and they jump through every hoop (often for too low a rate.)

One of the things we teach people to do is to define their target, to figure out who it is they can serve best, find out where their core competencies really lie, and go after that target, ignoring the rest. It is only when people put their energy into their most desired target and start letting the other, less-important objectives go, that they start to really succeed.
